Why strength training is a game-changer for women

Strength training, resistance training, weight training…whatever title you want to give it, if you’re not incorporating this form of training into your exercise routine, you may want to reconsider. Especially if you’re a woman. Even more especially if you’re a woman over 40! Here’s why:

Boosted Metabolism: It’s a sad fact of life that as you get older, lean muscle decreases, particularly when women go through menopause – this will mean your metabolism will also decrease and is a major cause of weight gain. Weight training builds lean muscle, turning your body into a calorie-burning powerhouse, even when you’re chilling. So if you think doing hours and hours of cardio is the best way to lose weight, think again. Strength training might just be the missing cog if you’re trying to lose weight and not seeing results.

Toned, Not Bulky: Forget the myths! Weight training sculpts your body, defining muscles and enhancing your natural beauty. It’s about feeling strong, confident, and embracing your unique strength. You will not suddenly get a body-builder’s physique – seriously the extremes those folk go to achieve that look is unimaginable – a little more than adding in a few press ups and squats I promise you.

Stronger Bones: Weight training is your secret weapon against osteoporosis (brittle bones). Again this is important at any age but especially beneficial for those approaching menopause when hormonal changes reduce bone mass.

Relieves/Prevents back pain: By strengthening the key core muscles in your body along with increasing the range of motion your spine is capable of, you will create much better support for your back. Your posture will start to improve and with that backache can also significantly reduce.

Joint health: Strength training supports joint health by fostering strong connective tissues and stabilising muscles. Glide through life with ease! Weight training supports joint health, making every move a dance of strength and flexibility.

Supports mental wellbeing: It’s not just about physical gains; it’s a mental boost too! Weight training reduces stress, and numerous studies have shown strength training can help to reduce anxiety and depression, elevate mood, and enhance cognitive function.

Hormonal Harmony: Let’s balance those hormones! Weight training helps regulate insulin, estrogen, and testosterone, keeping your body in sync and thriving.

I could go on…I simply cannot stress enough how much of a difference strength training can make. And if the thought of it fills you with dread, I am here to tell you it doesn’t have to be as complicated or as hard as you think. You don’t need to go to a gym, or even leave the comfort of your living room. Like with any exercise, the key is to start small. A few press ups during the adverts, squats as you wait for the kettle to boil. There are loads of free apps or online workout programmes you could follow at home. And if you are unsure and want additional support, you can always hire a personal trainer to get your started and make sure you’re doing it right.

It’s never too late to start strength training and start tapping into all the benefits listed above. What are you waiting for??
